The unit of academic credit at Truman State University is the semester hour. The terms semester hour and credit hour are synonymous. Twelve credit hours must be taken to be considered a full-time student. Full-time students are assessed one tuition fee that allows them to take 12 to 17 hours of credit. Any additional credit hours above 17 are considered an overload and will incur additional tuition fees. Special permission must be granted by the Vice President of Academic Affairs to carry an overload.
The average class load for the semester is 15 to 17 semester hours. Students employed in outside work should make necessary adjustments in the number of semester hours on their schedule. It is recommended that the class load be reduced by 2 to 3 semester hours for each 15 to 20 hours of outside work undertaken per week.
Students belonging to any of the categories below must maintain the minimum credit load per semester as listed:
| Category | Minimum Requirement |
| Truman Scholarships | 12 hours per semester OR 24 Truman credit hours in an academic year (fall, spring, and summer) |
